- Laura was born on August 17, 1924 in Magnolia, MO to Joseph Hall and Nellie Blanche (Jett) Raker. She graduated from Holden High School and then earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Central Missouri State Teachers College in Warrensburg, MO. She was a Teacher for the Independence School District and then retired from the Odessa R-7 School District in 1979. On May 26, 1946 Laura married B.B. Barr at the Independence First Presbyterian Church in Independence, MO and he preceded her in death on July 3, 1999. Laura was a member and elder of the New Horizon Presbyterian Church formerly known as the First Presbyterian Church in Odessa. She also served on the Farm Bureau Board, was a 4-H Leader and a member of the Retired Teachers Association. Laura was voted Volunteer of the Year in 1990, she spent countless hours volunteering with many different organizations throughout the years in Odessa. In addition to spending time with her family and friends, Laura enjoyed quilting, sewing and cooking.
Survivors include five children, Dennis Barr and wife Dyann of Lee’s Summit, MO, Stan Barr and wife Barbara of Richmond, MO, Barbara Akers and husband Wayne of Concordia, Kansas, Carolyn Llewellyn and husband Jim of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Shirley Power and husband Dan of Hutchinson, Kansas; nine grandchildren, and fifteen great grandchildren; one sister, Jewell Monson and husband Bill, Belton, MO; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Laura was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Donna and Rachel Llewellyn; one brother, Joseph Jett Raker and one sister, Marvalena Kinder.'
