Will of Samuel Means
In Christian Co, KY. Will Book "B" pages 74-75-76-77

In the name of God. This 11th of February 1813 I Samuel Means being sick of body but tolerable sound in mind and memory have thought proper to make and ordain this instrument of writing as my last will and testament.
First, I will that all my soul may go to God in peace who gave to me and that my body be decently buried and аs for my worldly goods and chattle I direct my brother Robert Means to be my Executor and Мary my wife Executrix. The Executor and Executrix and have appraisers appointed to appraise all my personal property as the law directs and at the time of said valuation the property shall be distributable in the following manner to wit:
First I do will and bequeath to my beloved wife Mary Means one third part of all my personal property and that she take it at its valuation at the time of the valuation after all my just debts and funeral expences are paid and the balance to be equally divided among my four sons, William B. Means, Elijah S. Means, Robert Меаns, and Young J. Means, only that I will and bequeath William B. Means my rifle gun and compass and all my surveying instruments and my saddle and bridle at their valuation and go as part of his legacy and the Executor and Executrix sell three of my horse creatures, one cow and calf, all my joiner and carpenter tools except a drawing knife, handsaw, half inch chisel, gimblet, hammer, inch and half inch and 3 quarter augers and shall remain in the hands of the Executors.
Sheep, hogs, and remainder of horses and cattle not mentioned, are not to be sold without real necessity for it and the lands are not be sold but divided in the following to wit: William B. Means my son to have а 84 acre tract joining the land on which I have certificate to Jacob Brunk granted to myself 50 acres to myself. 50 acres to Eljah S. Means entered and pattented in his own name joining the survey on which I live. Robert Means to have 75 acres entered in the name of Zackariah , Young J. Means to have fifty acres
of the north east square of the tract I live on entered by McCullough pattented in my own name, my wife to have 50 acres of said tract during her widowhood or lifetime she is to have all the rights and claims to said land during that time and all the time of my youngest son coming of age as equal division in quality and quantity shall be made of the balance of the last mentioned tract not denoted or shortly after either of the above mentioned circumstances shall happen with my wife.
As for my two slaves Jacob and Caroline they are to work or manufacture on said farm and place for the use of my family or hire out … have a third part of the claim and increase of my negroes during her lifetime and at her death all sold or so divided as to make it equal among all my children.
The Executrix to hold all the personal property which did not fall to her share as belonging to the legatees as … put the same to any kind of use she may think proper but to be answerable to each child as they the money and all the property now In hand to be inserted in the praisement bill and the Executor and Executrix each to keep a fair statement of all their necessary expenditures to settle business of said estate and to settle with the children as they may come of age calculating the children’s education and necessary expenditures to be taken out of their shares of the personal property if the same be sufficient and if the slaves does not do well on the place a working then the Executor shall hire them out and apply the money for the use of the family and should my wife shortly marry then she shall resign over all her right of Executrix to the Executor who shall manage the whole as witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this l4th of March 1813.

The last will and testament of Samuel Means, deceased, was produced in Court and proven by the oaths of Abner Bozarth, Noah Brunk and John Means subscribing witnesses thereto and order to be recorded. In testimony that the same is truly recorded with this certificate I have hereunto set ray hand.
